The old Lufkin tape measure gets pressed into play when I go higher or wider. I cut pairs of 1/2" dowel rods at 3',4',5' and 6' and use them to aim the overheads at the snare and get general eqidistance. I agree though, probably no tom mics and some type of overhead remedy.ĭepending on how intimate or live sounding is how I decide where to put the overheads. Like I said though, this setup sounds good, it's just too modern close mic'd sounding for what I'm doing now, I'm looking for less "independent clarity" and more of a "drums come together" sound. Playing a 4 piece Fibes drum kit, 1 crash, 1 ride.ġ> kick = a VH maybe? found in a couch = sounds good - radio shack? Oh yea, drums are tuned and I'm the drummer. That sounds similar to what I'm already doing without the overheads, I use one room mic, and e.q everything up front before tracking. Good drummers and a well tuned, great sounding kit helps of course. I find that after all of the rest of the tracks are finished I use the pan controls more than anything to get the drums to sit well in the overall mix. I'm not into the whole idea of magic bullet preamps and I don't compress drums.Īs long as I get a good solid signal usually just a bit of EQ and a bit of a shelf on the overheads and snare gets me a natural sounding drum track. I've been getting really great drum tracks using a Beta 52 on the kick,Audix i5 on the snare and a pair of Fatheads as overheads.Īlso depending on who's drumming I have put an AEA R84 as a room mic about 4 feet out in front of the kick at ride tom height. moody drums with nice shadows, you follow?

I'm hearing that psychodelic 60's mod art film music sound, you know like Baba Yaga or something. I'm now getting away from this tight, almost R&b / Steelydan drum sound and going for a more 60's old school room sound will natural decay and that "distance" sound.maybe the kinks meets old Rolling Stones or something. I'm going for a nice vibey room sound, mines ok, with carpet but also some nice reflections. I feel like I need to do some guitar and bass tracking, and THEN work on the drum sound and blend it with those. I can't capture the other instruments as nicely, but it's actually a little to crisp and close mic'd sounding. I find that getting the rest of my instruments to sit in the mix properly I have to start cutting/chissling away my great drum mix ,other wise they are overpowering my whole sound, almost a highlight of every track. they sound good! Maybe too good? And already mixed. In November 2015, Brady Drum Company announced the closure of the company via its official website and Facebook page.Yes, I've gotten some great drum sounds lately, and right when I've finally got a nice drum template set where I can plop down behind the kit and just hit record. In April 2015, Brady Drum Company ceased production of their instruments, following Chris Brady's ongoing health complications. Though the company manufactures all drums shells, their fame is gained from their snare drums. The company's client list includes over 400 internationally renowned drummers including Will Calhoun, Steve Ferrone, Mick Fleetwood, Chad Smith, Jeff Porcaro (formerly), Larry Mullen, Jr, Tre Cool and Thomas Lang. He possibly created the world's first 10", 12" and 16" snare drums, and is credited with their popularisation in modern music. The business was based in Armadale, an outer suburb of Perth, Western Australia.Ĭhris Brady introduced the world's first solid wood (hollow tree trunk) modern snare drum, and revolutionised the ply shell and block shell method of construction.
The firm used native Australian hardwoods, particularly jarrah, sheoak, spotted gum, marri, wandoo and lemon scented gum for the drums they manufactured. The designs and workmanship was predominantly the duty of the company's creator, Chris Brady. Brady Drum Company was an Australian manufacturing company who specialised in handcrafted drums since 1980.
